Why am I here?

That’s a big question!

I mean why am I here on this website? and on social media? and on the TEDx talk forum talking about crawling and development?

I believe that God has placed me here at such a time as this.

I am very aware that I am just one person in a very big world, one person who happens to love the field of Occupational Therapy.

I was introduced to OT at the age of 16. At that time, our very close family friends experienced a life-altering event. Their son Trey (who was the same age as me at the time, but not the same person as my husband Trey 🙂

He was in a near-fatal car accident and in a coma for weeks. My mom jumped in and helped their family, in the most unique of ways, and I was along for the ride.

From the hospital to the rehabilitation center, to the bringing him home for rehab with home health, right there in their once formal dining room. I was there.

Right there, in their converted formal dining room, it was revealed to me what I would be doing for the rest of my life.

Stay with me here, I promise to bring it back to The OT way.

In that room, I saw one thing that I will never forget. A boy my age, who had no idea how to sit up by himself. He was unable to speak sentences, or feed himself or go to the bathroom. It was shocking to say the least. Instead of feeling fearful and nervous, I was completely at peace being with him.

I can’t explain it, other than total comfort and peace, like I was supposed to be there.

On one of our visits to the ranch, which is where our friends lived, I entered Trey’s room and at the end of the bed had been tied a ski rope with a ski handle. I thought, how interesting? Asking Trey’s mom what it was for, was THE moment I discovered OT and how amazing it was.

This person who was called an Occupational Therapist had figured out that Trey loved to water ski and was good at it. She tied the rope to the end of the bed to TEACH HIM HOW TO SIT UP INDEPENDENTLY!!!!

This concept blew my mind!! The creativity and the specialized way to individualize his treatment!! It was the most beautiful picture of the use of occupation to drive motivation, in a very difficult situation. This one technique made it possible for this teen to feel empowered, encouraged, and engaged in his own life! His mom was able to see the hope that he could become restored physically, able to help himself once again.

It makes me cry to this day to think of this moment.

And the rest is history…….

Fast forward 31 years. Here I am today still doing what I love, seeking to give hope to families just like that OT did with Trey.

So I come to you with love in my heart and a deep passion for people to reach their potential.

What better place to start than at the beginning?

Child development and The OT way.
